Asbestos dust monitoring was required for construction of the building to keep the project in compliance with the San Francisco Health Code Article 22A, known as the Maher Ordinance. Naturally occurring asbestos is found in soil in the area around the hospital.

Farallon generated a site-specific asbestos dust mitigation plan, which was approved by the City of San Francisco and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. The asbestos dust monitoring program included operating multiple sampling stations, with a combination of real-time dust monitors and discrete samples collected over 24-hour periods for analysis by transmission electron microscopy.
